ENVIRONMENT:
--------------------------
MS-DOS 2.0 (or greater)
512k free memory
Monochrome (or color) monitor
Printer (any dot matrix)
Floppy or hard disk
MODIFYING THE ENVIRONMENT:
--------------------------
The 'PEN PAL' application program may require more intensive disk
utilization than other programs you are currently using. DOS permits
you to alter the environment to facilitate this intensive disk
utilization.
It is recommended that you create a CONFIG.SYS file (if the file is
not there already) which contains the following two statementes.
FILES=20
BUFFERS=8
DOS looks for the CONFIG.SYS file each time the computer is turned on
(or "re-booted"). When the file is found, the operating system alters
the environment corresponding to the contents of the file.

INSTALLING 'PEN PAL' ON SYSTEMS WITH A HARD DISK DRIVE:
--------------------------------------------------------
The diskette that your copy of 'PEN PAL' was distributed to you on
should not be used for running of 'PEN PAL'. You should first make
a back-up copy of the distribution disk and then install 'PEN PAL'
on either your hard disk or floppy disk system.
We recommended that you create a sub-directory that will contain the
'PEN PAL' program and distribution master files. The following DOS
commands will create a sub-directory called 'PENPAL':
C>CD\
C>MD\PENPAL
Once you have created the sub-directory, select the new sub-directory
by entering:
C>CD\PENPAL
Insert the 'PEN PAL' distribution disk into drive 'A'.
Next, copy the contents of your distribution disk on to your hard disk
by execuiting the following command:
C>COPY A:*.* C:
Remove your 'PEN PAL' distribution disk from drive 'A'.
Reboot your system in order to load the new values in your CONFIG.SYS
file.
Make your 'PEN PAL' sub-directory your current directory:
C>CD\PENPAL
Load 'PEN PAL' in order to initialize your data files.
C>PENPAL <return>
Upon completion of your system initialization you will be returned
to your system prompt. Reload 'PEN PAL' in order to start using it.
C>PENPAL <return>

INSTALLING 'PEN PAL' ON A DISKETTE
---------------------------------
The diskette that your copy of 'PEN PAL' was distributed to you on
should not be used for running of 'PEN PAL'. You should first make
a back-up copy of the distribution disk and then install 'PEN PAL'
on either your hard disk or floppy disk system.
In order to run 'PEN PAL' on a floppy disk system you will need two
disk drives. One drive to contain your program disk and the other to
contain your data files. ** NOTE - THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE FOR BOTH
THE 'PEN PAL' PROGRAM AND YOUR DATA FILES ON THE SAME FLOPPY DISK. *
Insert the 'PEN PAL' distribution disk in drive 'A' and select the 'A'
drive by entering "A:" (return).
Insert a blank FORMATED DISK into drive 'B'. This is the disk that your
working copy of 'PEN PAL' will be copied to.
Enter the following command:
A>COPY A:*.EXE B:
Upon completion of this copy operation remove your disk from drive 'A'
and replace with the new program disk in drive 'B'.
Load a new diskette for data files into drive 'B'.
Reboot your system then execute PENPAL.EXE in order to initialize your
system.
Load 'PEN PAL' in order to initialize your data files.
A>PENPAL <return>
Upon completion of your system initialization you will be returned
to your system prompt. Reload 'PEN PAL' in order to start using it.
A>PENPAL <return>
